Water is the major component of our body and is essential for life, therefore we could not live without it. For our body to function properly we need about three liters of water a day.

1. What is it?
Water is a colorless, odorless, tasteless and is the drink par excellence. It is an essential component of nature but also is the main component of our body, where it performs important functions. Water is essential for life.

2. The proportion of water in our bodies
Proportions. The proportion of water varies according to sex. It is the main component of our body, representing two thirds of the weight of it.

Taking as an example a 70 kg, water represent approximately 43 liters, representing about 61% of the total weight, while two-thirds within the cells and the extracellular rest.

This proportion of water in our body varies by age and sex. Thus, women, having more fat and less muscle mass, has a somewhat lower water content, which ranges between 50-55% of its total weight. In the newborn this percentage is 80%, which decreases with age, reaching a value of 50% in the elderly.

The water content of our body is kept constant thanks to the balance between the quantity of water consumed daily and the daily loss of it.

3. Where do you get?
To compensate for this volume of water removed, and assuming that there is a balance to which we refer, the amount of water consumed should be 2.6 liters per day.

Of these, we get about 1 liters of water contained in food. About 0.3 liters of water are formed by the oxidation of food nutrients in the body and others must proceed 1.3 liters of drinking water.

These figures are set to strict rule to follow, but that guide us about the right amount of water that we drink each day.

4. How water is lost?
In a healthy individual adult living in a temperate climate and does moderate physical activity, daily losses are estimated at some 2.6 liters, divided between urine (1.5 L), evaporation from the skin (0.5 L) , lung (0.4 L) and feces (0.2 L).

5. Functions
- It is the means that have been dissolved in all body fluids, blood, lymph, digestive secretions, feces and urine.
- Carries nutrients within cells and in turn allows the elimination of waste products from them.
- Intervene in the digestion of nutrients from food, not only facilitating the dissolution of the same, but their digestion through the hydrolysis process.
- Help shape and volume to the cells due to the pressure exerted on them.
- Maintains body temperature by evaporation of water contained in sweat.
- Avoid the friction in the joints.

6. Nutritional Needs
It is difficult to establish the water requirements of our body, since they depend on each individual as well as environmental conditions, physiological or pathological conditions that are.

To get an estimate, provided that the amount of water that must be ingested for a normal man sedentary lifestyle is 1 milliliter for each calorie provided in their diet.

In general, except in cases where there is danger of fluid retention in the body (kidney or heart) is recommended to drink 1.5 liters to 2 liters of water to meet the needs of the organism.

The sensation of thirst, although it may be a signal that our body needs water, not a mirror image of the exact amount of water that we drink to replenish the losses of the same.

The importance of water is such that a person can survive a month without food but only days without water.

In which cases should be increased consumption?
The water intake should be increased in the following cases:
- When we do strenuous exercise.
- During lactation.
- In high ambient temperatures.
- When we have fever.
- If vomiting, diarrhea.
- In decompensated diabetes.

All of these situations increase the losses, which requires a new estimate of needs to prevent any dehydration that can cause serious problems.

Normally it is preferable to an excess of water as an insufficient intake does not accumulate excess is eliminated by the kidney.
